Difference between a Chiropractor, Physiotherapist and Biokineticist

Joint Health Chiropractic Pretoria: With so much overlap between the chiropractic, physiotherapy and biokinetics fields, you may have found yourself at a T-junction deciding who to consult with after sustaining an injury.

The biggest difference between the three disciplines is that chiropractors predominantly utilize spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), while physiotherapists predominantly utilize mobilisation techniques and assist with the initial rehabilitation, whereas biokineticists are predominantly responsible for final phase rehabilitation. Chiropractor in Pretoria (Joint Health Chiropractic)

Chiropractic is an evidence-based, patient-centred approach to musculoskeletal (relating to muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints and bones) conditions. Chiropractors manipulate the joints in your spine, shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, hip, knee, foot and ankle, where signs of restricted movement are found. Important to note and understand from a scientific, evidence-based point of view with regards to terminology: Joints do not get misaligned otherwise it would have been referred to as a dislocation. Instead, over time and with specific injuries, they lose their normal full range of motion – therefore, it may feel like your body allows more movement towards one direction in comparison to the opposite direction. Gentle, specific manipulation techniques help to restore the range of motion of the joints that are affected. The technique that we use is a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust, which stretches the tissue and restores joint mobility. Furthermore, your chiropractor may also recommend stretches, exercises and lifestyle changes (for example, addressing troublesome work station ergonomics).

Physiotherapists

Physiotherapists tend to utilise mobilisation which involves moving the joint through its range of motion to improve flexibility, release tension, as well as relieve muscle spasms and pain. Physiotherapists aim to correct imbalances or muscle weaknesses that may have resulted from repetitive strain, surgery or due to injuries. With physiotherapy there is a much bigger focus on post-stroke or post-surgical rehabilitation in comparison to what chiropractors normally do. There is also a larger emphasis on using specific exercises for rehabilitating muscles and restoring movement. Physiotherapy are also known to alleviate symptoms associated with certain respiratory conditions such as phlem and difficulty breathing in both babies and adults.

Whether you decide to consult with a chiropractor or physiotherapist, once the pain has subsided and basic function is restored, you may be referred to a biokineticist to assist you with the final phase of rehabilitation depending on the nature of injury and reason for your initial consultation, by means of an evidence-based physical activity program prescription.

Biokineticists

Biokineticists prescribe a physical activity program focused on optimizing your proprioception, balance, flexibility, explosive power, endurance, strength and speed depending on your needs. Not only do they focus on rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders, but also assist in managing chronic conditions including, but not limited to, cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Keep in mind that within the three fields discussed above, there are practitioners with special interests in certain areas, and that the information above may not apply to each and every practitioner, but should rather be seen as a basic overview of the three professions.
