Frequently Asked Questions

Chiropractic is a health profession focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system as well as how these disorders influence the nervous system and overall well-being. With chiropractic, there is an emphasis on a natural approach to health care with the proven ability to relieve musculoskeletal pain and promote better health.

Chiropractic care has helped a multitude of people recover from joint-related conditions, and as a result is known as one of the greatest drug-free and nonsurgical health care professions, worldwide. In South Africa, chiropractors are trained as primary care physicians (PCP) meaning that they are often the first contact that a patient have with the healthcare system. Therefore, their training (a comprehensive six year program) entails thorough assessment and diagnosis of patients in order to establish the best approach to health care, be it chiropractic care or referral.

This is a manual procedure that utilizes highly advanced skills developed during the intensive training obtained during chiropractic education. The technique involves the practitioner using their hands to apply a controlled thrust, being a force of a specific magnitude or degree in a specific direction to a joint. Chiropractic manipulation is a specialized procedure, patient specific and rarely causes discomfort. Although it should not be assumed to be a quick fix, as with any other form of conservative therapy, patients often note immediate improvement in the symptoms experienced.

World-class quality research studies have proven repeatedly that chiropractic care is safe and effective for treating numerous joint-related conditions including headaches, neck pain, low back pain, etc.

Musculoskeletal conditions are known to respond excellently to the non-invasive, drug-free and safe therapy that chiropractic offers. As with any other health care profession, potential adverse effects cannot be excluded even though the chiropractic profession has a brilliant safety record. Some patients may experience a slight tenderness or stiffness post-treatment as seen after a focused, high-intensity training workout or for example experienced after that first training session when someone has not been training for a while. This minor discomfort typically subsides within 24 hours.

Spinal manipulative therapy of the neck also known as cervical manipulation are used to treat many neck and headache conditions. The tension and pressure that patients commonly experience during these conditions are relieved by cervical manipulation which restores range of motion, reduces muscle spasm and improves joint mobility.

Some reports have associated high-velocity upper spinal manipulative therapy of the neck with a specific rare type of stroke, or vertebral artery dissection. However, studies suggests that this type of arterial injury often has a spontaneous nature in patients who are suffering from a pre-existing arterial disease. There are numerous everyday activities such as swimming, certain treatments in a hair salon and rotating the head while driving that have been associated with these dissections. Patients with this issue usually seek professional care at a family physician or chiropractor, however, their treatment is not the cause of the injury. There is an extremely rare link between the incidence of artery dissection and spinal manipulative therapy of the neck, and could be compared to the incidence of this type of stroke among the general population.
